"DIKH HE NA BISTER" Memorial to Romn*ja and Sinti*ze who were killed during the national socialism

2019

Together with Wienwoche, this monument, I have designed as the temporal memorial dedicated to Roma victims of the national socialism during the Second World War in Austria. The memorial was opened in the city center of Vienna in September 2019 and was located there for a period of a few weeks.

Along with other artists and activists, Roma activist Irina Spataru, the curator of the memorial, makes a demand for all of the memorial sites that should have been built by others long ago, and exclaims loudly: "DIKH HE NA BISTER!"LOOK AND DO NOT FORGET!"

Historical introduction:

75 years after the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, there is still no central location in Austria for commemorating the genocide of the Rom*nja and Sinti*ze. A small plaque in Vienna's Barankapark commemorates the Rom*nja and Sinti*ze deported from there in 1941. During National Socialism, more than 90% of the Austrian Rom*nja and Sinti*ze were murdered – nevertheless, the Roma Holocaust seems to be a nearly forgotten Holocaust.

For years, Rom*nja activists in Austria have been fighting for a visible commemoration of these victims: for a day of commemoration. For an archive.

For a memorial – for a monument in Vienna!
